Old-Fashioned Chestnut Stuffing or Dressing

Although this is a type of stuffing I generally associate more with Christmas, I do like to share it with you before Thanksgiving in case you want to have it with your turkey. The chestnuts add a great flavor and it will go perfectly well with poultry such as turkey, chicken, or goose in addition to things like pork and even beef.

Old-Fashioned Chestnut Stuffing or Dressing
Ingredients:

  • 2 cups diced celery
  • 2 cups chopped onion
  • 1 7.4 ounce jar roasted peeled chestnuts, chopped (about 1 1/4 cups)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 8 ounces  dry bread cubes (croutons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups turkey broth

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 325ºF.
  2. Saute celery, onion and chestnuts in butter until vegetables are soft.
  3. Combine with remaining ingredients.
  4. Place uncooked stuffing in a buttered casserole dish and cover with foil.
  5. Bake 30 minutes, then remove foil.
  6. Bake another 15-20 minutes until lightly browned on top.
