Baked Garlic Cheese Grits

by Sue Lau | Palatable Pastime

This is a traditional southern grits casserole made with garlic and cheese, then baked. It is pretty much a staple for any good country breakfast. Not much else to say as it is pretty self-explanatory and that I am sure you will love it.
Switch up the cheese if you like- just about any type will work.

Baked Garlic Cheese Grits

  • 1 cup quick cooking grits
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 ounces cheddar cheese
  • 4 ounces American cheese
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Extra shredded cheese (optional)

  1. Place the grits, chicken broth, garlic powder and salt and pepper in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Cook, stirring, over moderate heat until mixture thickens.
  3. Take off the heat and stir in chopped or shredded cheeses with the butter until it all melts and incorporates.
  4. Whisk together the eggs and milk, then quickly whisk that into the grits.
  5. Pour mixture into a buttered baking dish (square or rectangular) that holds about 6-8 cups.
  6. Top with more shredded cheese if you like, but it doesn’t need it.
  7. Bake at 350F for 40-50 minutes or until a knife comes out clean and it is set.

  1. Very easy and tasty! I’d like to try this with a dollop of roasted garlic instead of garlic powder. But delicious as posted. Thanks for sharing! Made for FYC game on
