You might see these crispy delicious chips show up in my food photography here and there. No small wonder since I make them all the time. They are quite simple to make and you can customize the seasoning for whatever type of bagel you are using or to go with whatever topping.

They can also be simply seasoned with butter or oil and salt. But however you choose to make them, you’ll find them fresh and delicious from your oven in about half an hour- perfect to go with your culinary creations of soft cheese spreads, dips, or even just sliced cheese or hummus. They are also excellent with soup.

They are perfect to add to your pantry, and a great way to use up any bagels that may have gone stale, since the chips don’t care (and in fact turn out better if your bagels ARE stale).

You can make your chips sweet or savory- as you might see below I have basted some apple cinnamon bagels. These can be sprinkled with baking type spices such as ground cinnamon or cinnamon sugar if you like, after first brushing with melted butter. I didn’t sprinkle the ones below because the flavor was already in the bagels.

This next photo shows the savory type bagel slices, basted up with olive oil and seasonings. You can also use melted butter instead of olive oil- whichever you prefer. These are seasoned with a bit of Italian seasoning, garlic, and a touch of Parmesan cheese. The Parmesan bakes dry rather well. I do use dry seasonings in granulated, powdered or ground form as things like minced garlic don’t apply as well when basting.

Ingredients

Savory Bagel Chips

  • plain or savory bagels such as everything/combo, Asiago, pumpernickel, etc.
  • olive oil or melted butter
  • savory seasonings such as Italian seasoning, basil, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, caraway seeds, etc.

Sweet Bagel Chips

  • sweet flavored bagels such as plain, cinnamon, blueberry, strawberry, etc.
  • melted butter or extra virgin olive oil
  • baking type spices such as ground cinnamon, apple pie spice, etc., or a pinch of sugar

Instructions

  • Refrigerate bagels after baking or purchase as they slice better when cold. Slice them thinly with a bread knife.
  • Preheat oven to 250F.
  • Line a baking sheet or cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • Place bagel slices in a single layer on the baking sheet (don’t mix the savory and sweet types when baking or the odors will transfer).
  • Mix together melted butter or olive oil with preferred seasonings.
  • Using a silicone basting brush, paint the bagel chips lightly, until they look like the photo above.
  • Bake at 250F for about 20-25 minutes (depending how thin they are), then cool them on a wire cookie rack.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
  • Serve with soft cheese, flavored cream cheese spreads, hard cheese slices, sliced smoked salmon or other desired toppings, as you would crackers, or as an accompaniment to soups.
