Gingerbread is an old-fashioned dessert bread made with ginger, spices, black treacle and golden syrup.

Equipment

  • 1 9-inch sq. baking pan

Ingredients
  

Wet ingredients:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup of butter melted and cooled
  • 1/4 cup black treacle
  • 1/4 cup of golden syrup

Dry ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup candied ginger
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1-1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

Other:

  • 1 cup prepared whipped cream
  • nutmeg garnish optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350° f.
  • Spray a 9-inch square baking pan with Baker's Release spray.
  • Stir dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl.
  • Stir wet ingredients separately in another bowl.
  • Gently combine wet and dry ingredients and spread in pan.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until springy.
  • Cool then serve squares with whipped cream and nutmeg.
