Ingredients
  

Meat sauce:

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 large onion (chopped)
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
  • 1 teaspoon each salt and black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon mild paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 16 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 16 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

Other:

  • 8 hamburger buns (toasted)
  • 8 slices American cheese or mild cheddar cheese

Instructions
 

  • Brown beef with bell pepper, onion, celery and garlic.
  • Drain the fat and discard.
  • Add remaining sauce ingredients and simmer for 15-20 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Serve on toasted buns with cheese slices.
