Pixie Stix Candy Straws is my recipe of the day with  the Sunday Funday blogging group. We get together weekly to post on fun food topics.

Did you  know today is the first day of summer? And to honor it, and the fairies who celebrate it, we are sharing magically fun recipes.  These can be any that  remind of fairies, pixies, elves and so on.

Why Pixie Stix?

Pixie  Stix are a throwback to my childhood. And one  of the things I loved buying at the local confectionery.

What are Pixie Stix?

Pixie Stix are a sweetened candy sugar filled into straws, which kids open  and pour  into  their mouth  for a flavor blast.

You can  make this with the right amount of unsweetened soft drink mix (Kool-Aid) and sugar. Also, this can be made in any flavor. I like  lemonade for the sour pop.  Plus it doesn’t stain your tongue.

But kids won’t care (and the color wears off). Make some  for all the kids at your summer  gatherings and I am sure they will think you are their fairy godmother. And who’s to say you are not? 😉

We’ll be filling paper straws today

The set up is paper straws. I pop them into a short tumbler to keep them upright.

Make sure to use paper straws and not plastic ones. Plastic won’t crimp  closed. Plus, they are not good for the environment.

Start by pinching the bottoms closed

Do this before you forget. Not cool to have sugar spilling everywhere. Trust me. I dropped one on the floor and grit was everywhere.

The All Important Plastic Funnel

This is the secret to filling the straws. The funnel will not fit *into* the straw. But the straw will fit into the funnel.

So How Does *that* Work?

Squeeze your fingers around the bottom of the funnel. And when the straw fills, remove it while it is over the sugar bowl. The shake out just enough to pinch the top closed.

Equipment

  • small funnel
  • 30-36 paper drink straws

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 (0.14 ounce packet) unsweetened Kool-aid soft drink mix (any flavor) (I used lemonade)

Instructions

  • Mix sugar with kool-aid powder.
  • Pinch the bottom of the straw closed and fold it over tightly.
  • Use a small funnel to fill the straws; you may need to do this in reverse, sticking the straw up the bottom of the (larger) funnel and wrapping your hand around the meeting place so the sugar doesn't escape the bottom.
  • Release over the sugar bowl, then tap out just a little bit so you can pinch the top closed.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. (I used a gallon ziplock bag).
