Slow Cooker Beef Oxtails  is my recipe of the day with my blogging group Multicooker Monday.

Oxtails can be a little short on meat compared to some cuts, but extremely long  on flavor,  so don’t short yourself on how many  you buy for your meal, as there is a bit of bone. But the price is definitely worth it.

You will find that the cartilage that is in those  melts into the  sauce for  a mouthwatering  flavor that is perfect with rice,  noodles or mashed potatoes. The  gravy  is  liquid gold.

Sometimes I find these on the menu at local soul  food, southern, Jamaican, and Senegalese  restaurants, should you want to sample them before making  some on your own. I know when I mentioned having made these, some of my friends said they had never tried them.

Often I will recommend trying  something  in a  restaurant before you make it yourself,  so you have a baseline of flavor should questions  arise during cooking. But obviously I  would tell you that you’ll love  these exactly the way I make them.

I served these on the plate  with tomato for color. And  while I serve those a lot  during the gardening season, I would also  recommend something  like green beans with bacon or collard greens  as a side. And cornbread. It’s all very homey and delish.

Equipment

  • slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 3-1/2 pounds beef oxtails
  • salt and black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 2 large onions (sliced)
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon habanero pepper hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 ounce packet onion soup mix

Instructions

  • Season oxtails with salt and pepper and brown in 2 tablespoons oil.
  • Place oxtails in the bottom of the crock with the onions.
  • Stir together the remaining ingredients and pour over the top.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours.
