Hot Brewed Cacao

Hot Brewed Cacao is my recipe of the day with the blogging group From Our Dinner Table. We post on Sundays on various topics. This week the topic is Creamy Cocoa Recipes.
I decided to brew up some hot cacao, which is totally sugar-free and dairy free.

My recipe is not so much creamy unless you want it to be. How brewed cacao is made by brewing cocoa nibs the same way you would brew coffee or tea. The flavor is very much chocolate all by itself, and lacks the problems that milk or sugar bring with them. In fact, it is quite a healthy low calorie drink. Perfect for #DietJanuary.
And don’t be fooled by the tea-like color. It might be light on color, but it is long on taste.
But sure, just like coffee, feel free to dress it up with sweeteners and dairy all you want. Or just sit back like me and drink it black. Hot chocolate just became sin-free. And very much diet legal.
What are Cacao Pods, Cacao Beans and Nibs?
I had been at my local chocolatier (Maverick) when I saw a cacao pod on display. I put my hand in there to give you size reference.
Inside the pod are the beans which are roasted the same way you would coffee beans. They are the large ones in the bowl. If you break those down, they become what are called nibs. You can use either cacao beans or nibs in this recipe. You would just need to crush or grind the beans in a mortar & pestle or food processor. The nibs you can use as they are.
I used my French Press coffee maker to brew this up. But if you don’t have one just stir your cracked nibs into boiling water then run it through a strainer or coffee filter.

I am so curious about this!! I love the smell of cocoa nibs – the color of this drink is really unique.
Considering I have to cut way back in January, I will love have this as an honest chocolate drink with no guilt.
I have some nibs. I’m going to have to try this and see what it tastes like. It sounds delicious.
