Old-Fashioned Candied Yams is my recipe of the day for the blogging event Holiday Side Dish Week. I decided to share a DIY version of canned yams in syrup. So you can use fresh sweet potatoes in recipes calling for that as you might prefer.

Old-Fashioned Candied Yams are a version of cut sweet potatoes in syrup, to be eaten as is or used in other recipes. Like Bruce’s canned candied yams. Which are commonly found in many Thanksgiving recipes. However they are easy enough to do on your own.

I try to get the really skinny sweet potatoes for this. Especially small ones. But you can also cut the bigger ones into chunks. Some of the ones they sell are huge!

Arguably enough, you may like to eat these as is, without putting into a casserole or anything else. They will be great with some butter, brown sugar and cinnamon (my fav toppings for baked sweet potatoes). Not everyone likes marshmallows, although I enjoy those from time to time.

Old-Fashioned Candied Yams

Ingredients

  • 1-3/4 pounds skinny sweet potatoes
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • pinch salt
  • 2 4-inch cinnamon sticks
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • pinch nutmeg
  • pinch ground cloves

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Peel sweet potatoes into medallions or chopped into chunks (if from larger potatoes).
  • Place yams in cider and water with salt and cinnamon sticks; bring to a boil then reduce heat to simmer for 12 minutes.
  • Lift out potatoes and place in a 1.5-quart buttered casserole dish and set aside.
  • Take 1-1/2 cups of the cooking water (discard the rest) and return to pan with the cinnamon sticks.
  • Stir in 3/4 cup brown sugar; simmer and reduce until syrup measures one cup.
  • Stir in the butter, nutmeg and cloves.
  • Pour syrup over sweet potatoes.
  • Cover dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for 30 minutes more.
