Iced molasses cookies are an old-fashioned, slightly crisp variation on gingerbread cookies with a cream cheese icing that sets up.

My recipe of the day is for iced Molasses Cookies with the #ChristmasCookies week event, which also includes a giveaway with prizes from the sponsors, Millican pecan and Adams extracts.

These iced molasses cookies are different from the usual molasses cookies which are rolled in sugar. They remind me of the type of iced molasses cookies sold at the Bonbonerie in Cincinnati which I adore. So that it was I was trying to emulate.

They don’t put sprinkles on theirs as they sell them year-round, but you can do them  with or without.

The icing has a bit of cream cheese so these will need to be kept chilled. That also adds to the shelf life of the cookies. The icing does dry well so no worries that it will be like a buttercream.

Gingerbread is quite similar to these although gingerbread cookies perhaps have a bit more ginger, and heavier on the molasses too.

Adams Extract

Prize 2 – Adams Extract Prize Pack

Adams traces its beginnings back to Battle Creek, Michigan, when John A. Adams began making and selling his Green Plant Sarsaparilla extract, Adamur, in 1888. In 1905, he moved his family to Beeville, TX.

At the time, most vanilla sold to pharmacies and was often labeled “Do not bake or freeze.” John A. Adams’ wife yearned for a flavoring that wouldn’t bake or freeze out. He announced that he could produce a better vanilla than the one his wife was currently using.

Working with just $6.71 worth of materials on top of an old icebox, John A. Adams discovered the formula he wanted. To test this product, his wife whipped up a cake for the family to try. “John, this is the BEST flavoring I have ever used,” she announced. “Well, that’s old man Adams BEST,” he responded.

  • 1/2 cup soft unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves


  • 1/2 ounce soft cream cheese
  • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk


  • Cookies sprinkles


  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Cream butter, shortening and sugar until smooth.
  • Add egg, molasses and vanilla.
  • Mix in flour,baking powder, baking soda, salt, spices until smooth.
  • Chill batter 30 minutes.
  • Roll dough into balls from one tablespoon dough and place on parchment lined baking sheets 1-1/2 inches apart.
  • Bake 13 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges.
  • Let cool completely on pans.
  • Stir together icing ingredients and spread on cooled cookies.
  • Sprinkle with jimmies.
  • Allow cookies to dry completely, then store between wax paper sheets in an airtight container, refrigerated.

  1. My favorite are oatmeal scotchies, but it has more to do with the handfuls of butterscotch chips I eat while we are making them.

    • We call those baking party nibbles. My favorites are toasted pecans. I am surprised I have any left for recipes.

  2. My favorite cookie would have to be my chocolate chip with candied walnuts, or amaretti cookies. Although I really love all cookies!
