High Protein Scottish Porridge Oats is my recipe of the day with the blogging group Sunday Funday. We post weekly on varying topics. This week we’re featuring oatmeal recipes for National Oatmeal Month. Glad you could join us!
This recipe is inspired by actor Sam Heughan, who plays the character Jamie Fraser on the show Outlander. (For those not familiar, the show is set primarily in Scotland in the mid 1700’s, but also involves a time travel element between that time and the mid-to-late 1900’s, as well as travels to other countries of the period. It’s an adventure-romance with quite the devoted following.)
Mr Heughan likes to cook, and this is based on his favorite way to prepare porridge. He likes to add protein (in the form of protein powder and peanut butter), as well as fruit, for a healthful and hearty start to his day. The protein helps him maintain his strict diet and physique when filming the show, and the porridge fuels him up for a long day of acting and exertion.
He also enjoys his Scottish whisky and has his own brand of blended whisky, Sassenach (a term of endearment for his love interest in the show, meaning lowlander, foreigner, or, most appropriately in this case, “outlander”). In fact, I enjoyed watching Sam dunk his little Scottie dog shortbread cookies in the whisky on an episode of his humorous travel series with Outlander costar Graham McTavish, Men in Kilts.
All that said, this is indeed a solid start to the day, providing more sustenance than the typical bowl of oatmeal we usually serve here in the States. We certainly enjoyed it. I do recommend using Scottish (or Irish) porridge oats if you can get them – they make for a creamy texture and are very tasty. And the optional Lyle’s golden syrup is simply divine!
