Alpine Glühmost (Spiced Mulled Hard Cider)

This month’s Eat the World heads to the mountainous alpine nation of Liechtenstein, located between Switzerland and Austria in Europe. You don’t tend to see a lot of cookbooks for Liechtenstein, so this is a great opportunity to learn about a few of their recipes.

For my recipe, I’m sharing a recipe for Glühmost which is a popular drink in Liechtenstein for the holidays and winter months. If one were to be so lucky to go on a ski trip to Liechtenstein you might enjoy one of these at a snowy chalet, or perhaps you’d try a Hot Toddy, hot buttered rum or Glühwein.

The difference between Glühwein and Glühmost being whether they’re made from wine or hard (fermented) cider. The similarity being that both of them are warm, spiced alcoholic drinks. However, if you prefer to abstain you can make this with sweet apple cider or apple juice instead (but reduce or omit the added sugar).

My recipe gives a range of sweetener since ciders vary in sweetness. I recommend starting on the low end and adding more until you like the level of sweetness. I used Angry Orchard Crisp Apple cider, which was a little drier and slightly tart.

  1. What a cozy and inviting recipe! I especially love how the spiced mulled hard cider (Glühmost) takes simple apple cider and elevates it with warm autumnal spices like cinnamon, star anise and fresh ginger—it’s the kind of drink that invites comfort and connection on a chilly evening.
