Smoked Sausage with Sauerkraut and Pear is my recipe of the day with the blogging group From Our Dinner Table. On Sundays we  post  together using a common theme. This week we are sharing  pear recipes.

For my selection I opted to do a sauerkraut dish in celebration of the new year. I often make my sauerkraut with a variety of smoked meats and fruit, especially apple.

You will find that pear also makes a delicious addition to recipes like this. The sweetness of the fruit is equally complementary to ingredients such as sauerkraut with the sweet balancing its sour nature.

The sauerkraut makes a great supper when paired with something like mashed potatoes or noodles. And adding a green vegetable fills out the meal. It’s a great way to start the new year with a dinner full of comfort and flavor.

Equipment

  • Slow Cooker or Crockpot

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 16 ounces smoked sausage (chopped)
  • 32 ounces fresh pack sauerkraut
  • 14.5 ounces canned pears in juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon each salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • Brown onion and sausage in olive oil until the onion is soft.
  • Place mixture in the crockpot with the sauerkraut, pears, juice, and seasonings.
  • Stir and cover with the lid.
  • Cook on High for 4 hours.
