Sausage and Cheese French Toast Roll-Ups

I decided to make some French toast roll ups with sausage and cheese. After thinking about it for awhile, I decided to use gouda, since it has a mild flavor. I really didn’t want a sharp tasting cheese.

Other good cheeses might be European muenster or some mild colby cheese. American cheese might also suffice if you have it on hand.

These are simple to make provided the cheese is at room temperature so it rolls up easily. Make sure the bread touches each other at the end of the roll so you can press it once it is dipped.

Pure maple syrup is always the best as a dip. But even a sugar free pancake syrup will work. Or perhaps you’d like these plain, eating in the car if you are late to work or school.

Equipment

  • 1 nonstick pancake griddle

Ingredients

  • 9.6 ounces brown n' serve sausages heated-12 links
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 8.4 ounces deli-sliced gouda cheese at room temperature-12 slices
  • 12 slices soft white bread

Instructions

  • Brown sausages and set aside.
  • Whisk eggs with the little bit of milk and maple syrup.
  • On each slice of bread, place a slice of cheese topped with a sausage.
  • Roll up the bread, trimming the cheese if it is long and comes out of the end. You want the egg to be able to stick and I noticed on my cheese one side was longer than the bread but the other just right.
  • Dip the rolls in the egg batter. Press the end of the dipped bread down to seal.
  • Then place seam side on a griddle lightly oiled or sprayed with nonstick and heated.
  • Roll the French toast as it browns until all sides are golden.
  • Serve with maple syrup to dip in or whatever type syrup you prefer.

  1. I loved the concept of the French Toast and was delicious. I knew I’d like it, but I actually enjoyed it more than I expected. My whole family loved it as much as I did. Wish I had this recipe when my kids were little, as it makes a great quick grab-and-go breakfast. Thank you, Sue for sharing. Made it for The AmaZ’ing Race 2023 & What’s on the Menu tag games.
