Quick cabbage rolls and sauerkraut are perfect for the busy cook who wants the usual time-consuming supper on the table in about thirty minutes.
Quick Cabbage Rolls and Sauerkraut
By Sue Lau | Palatable Pastime
Quick Cabbage Rolls and Sauerkraut is my recipe of the day, which utilizes frozen cabbage rolls from Trader Joe’s, which while convenient and easy to make, lack any sort of sauce or finishing touches.
Convenient Food Buy (with a catch!)
I bought them when I was shopping in a hurry and when I got home, realized there wasn’t any type of sauce on them. So adding a few pantry ingredients, I have transformed them into being more like the cabbage rolls I do in my slow cooker.
I do like sauerkraut with them to brighten the flavor, and always some sort of tomato based sauce.
Served alongside something like mashed potatoes and gravy or buttered egg noodles, and adding a side such as peas or green beans, the whole homestyle dinner is there.
Cruciferous Veggie
I have read some reviews that claim these cabbage rolls smell really bad by themselves. Well, honestly, they are a cruciferous veggie, so they are going to smell like cabbage cooking. But beyond that, as to flavor, just right out of the package they do need something, as there really isn’t much sauce. And no one I know would eat cabbage rolls like that.
But plopping the frozen rolls right onto the sauerkraut as it simmers is a brilliant idea, at least for me. Dinner will have the aroma of kraut, but for some of us that is a comforting thing that reminds of home, cool autumn days and wholesome stick to your ribs cooking.
Kraut Lovers Gather Near!
So if you’re still with me knowing that kraut is in the dish (some people just hate cabbage), you’ll still be here for the cabbage rolls. And for those who buy these and realize there isn’t much sauce inside, won’t have to worry, and you might even want to do this on purpose. Considering making cabbage rolls from scratch is a pain, if not a delicious pain.
Just grab a jar of kraut and can of tomatoes when you buy the cabbage rolls. And if you are really in a hurry, you could grab a bag of those refrigerated mashed potatoes to just heat and serve, saving even more time. They aren’t top of the line, but they are okay and good for a pinch.
