Field Peas with Smoked Turkey (Instant Pot )
By Sue Lau | Palatable Pastime
Field Peas with Smoked Turkey (Instant Pot ) is my recipe of the day. I cooked up some field peas, aka cow peas (or similar to black-eyed peas) along with some frozen smoked turkey legs in my electric pressure cooker.

I am crazy about smoking up turkey in my pellet smoker around the holidays. I like to get the turkeys on sale. Then I cut up the pieces into specific parts. Like breast for sliced meats. Lesser parts like the drums and wings are used for seasoning.
Of course I won’t use those all right away so off to the freezer they go. And I don’t know about you but I can be terrible about remembering to defrost those things.
Amazingly enough, you can toss the frozen drums right into the pot, and cook at pressure. Then out come two thawed legs and some instantly made smoked turkey broth as well. Nifty, eh? I think so.

We throw all these peas and meat into a bowl and serve it up homestyle with some cornbread. I like a little chopped onion or chow chow on top. And I am also fond of a green hot sauce or jalapeno hot sauce to spice it up. But my husband does like Tabasco. We have a collection of hot sauces going, some bought, but many are homemade.
Field peas, like cow peas, are not peas at all and are almost the same as black-eyed peas. They taste about the same. Many southerners will be able to get these fresh, but they can also be bought dried. Use whichever of the dried peas you have.
These are perfect for New Year’s Day and considered to be a “lucky” food. I don’t know anything about that, but we do enjoy our food traditions, and this is one. I hope you enjoy this recipe as well.
