Charleston Receipts Hot Slaw is a wilted cabbage salad with piquant dressing found in the classic community cookbook from South Carolina, excellent served hot or cold.
Charleston Receipts Hot Slaw
By Sue Lau | Palatable Pastime
Charleston Receipts Hot Slaw is my recipe of the day today with the blogging group From Our Dinner Table. The recipe comes from the classic community cookbook Charleston Receipts, by the Junior League of Charleston.
It is a variation of a type of hot slaw that I have made before, although my version was more Amish.
Essentially the shredded cabbage is quickly wilted in a pan and treated with the sweet-sour dressing.
This is a very good version, although not as piquant as the type I am used to. For an inexpensive side dish, however, it rocks. So check out the book if you are interested.

Thank you for the nice recipe.
This reminds me of the years we lived in Germany. Sweet memories. Thanks for the post.
Thanks!
I love those little community cookbooks. I can never resist picking them up.
Some of the best recipes I have are from those community cookbooks. I would never have thought to cook cabbage before making slaw, but now I want to try it.
Yummm! This sounds like something I would love – I pretty much will eat cabbage any which way, but a slightly wilted hot slaw salad sounds really good! I have a few of those community style cookbooks too, I love them, and the stories that come with the recipes. They were the original “bloggers”. 🙂
