Vegan Coney Dogs is my recipe of the day with the blogging group Sunday Funday. We post new recipes weekly using a common topic. This week we are sharing vegan recipes for a barbecue.

I had originally made these some time back for another event that I missed the deadline on. The recipe then becomes what I call “cursed”. Since they have to find a new publishing date and tend to have a higher chance of being sidelined again. But we have made it to posting day this time.
The chili is one of my vegan/vegetarian chili variations. I have been making similar ones since the 1990’s when I did eat vegetarian food exclusively. There were no vegan hot dogs back then. Perhaps some nasty tvp concoction. The choices today are far better.
Perhaps if there were more options then…
The cheese is also vegan cheese. I am not totally thrilled with the taste of vegan cheese so if you are vegetarian just go with the dairy version. If you’re vegan, I understand the challenge. You could skip it, as the nutritional yeast does add a little cheesy flavor. Options.
Watch your ingredients for sugars if your vegan is strict. Regular granulated sugar and many non-organic things like mustard aren’t necessarily vegan.
Beet sugar is organic and what you will find in vegan forms. Do NOT use honey. It’s not sugar and it is also not vegan. Worcestershire sauce contains fish so use a vegan version. Bread can be hard if it contains that tiny bit of sugar for the yeast. But I don’t think your vegan will mind the minute amount. Ask.

They do have many more vegan options for burgers and sausages now and some of them are not bad at all.
A nice option for meatless barbeque. Kids and adults missing meat would love this.
