I am sharing my recipe for chikoo smoothies, which I mixed with pineapple and strawberries. This filled out the volume and flavor. It was my first time using the fruits, and although I had several, it wasn’t enough to fill the blender.

But it is a good thing, since the strawberries and pineapple went so well with the chikoo.

What is a chikoo fruit?

Whole chikoo fruit appear as a brownish colored fruit that looks a little bit like a potato. Inside, it has fruit along with some dark seeds.

It grows in various places worldwide, and has a pleasant “mixed  fruit” or tutti fruity flavor that blends well with other fruits. It may also have hints of vanilla or caramel. I think of fruits like these as exotic every-fruits.

You can probably find these at local ethnic markets or specialty grocers.

Chikoo fruit needs to be used when it is very ripe. Check to see if the fruit gives a little bit under light pressure. Then cut it open and remove the seeds. You may see some spots that look lightly bruised from the ripeness, but that is fine.

I use a serving spoon to scoop out the pulp rather than peeling off the skin. It is just easier that way. Plop all the fruit you retrieve into your blender along with the rest of the ingredients.

You can see inside that the seeds are easily removed. Plus some of the darker spots I mentioned. It does not mean they are too ripe to use.

Mixed together this smoothie makes an interesting twist on a breakfast drink instead of the usual fruit juice.
