Twenty Hot Dog Recipes for Dog Days of Summer starts with hot dogs inspired by the Baja California area and continues from there.
Baja Hot Dog
By Sue Lau | Palatable Pastime
The Dog Days of Summer have arrived and the heat is on!
Of course, Dog Days really don’t have much to do with hot dogs, and much to do with Sirius, the Dog Star, which rises in the night sky around July 3 and hangs about until the first couple weeks of August. And this time is sultry, hot, usually with a lot of thunderstorms and oppressive humidity or sometimes hot droughts. In other words, grilling and air-conditioning season.
And during grilling season I really like making hot dogs and there are tons of ways to make them. As well, they are great for backyard picnics.
And now that July has arrived (It’s National Hot Dog month too!) with that pesky star, Americans are estimated to eat over seven billion hot dogs this summer. How will you be having yours?
For my offering today, I am doing my version of the Santa Rosalia Baja Dog a friend posted online some years back and I loved it. She wrapped her dogs with bacon and grilled them, but I find it just as easy to tuck a crisp slice of bacon in the bun next to the dog. I also made the toppings slightly more Tex-Mex, using salsa instead of ketchup, just because. And while I don’t put cheese on mine, you can add a little to yours (like a taco) if you like.
I’ve also asked my friends for some hot dog recipe ideas along with a few extra of my own, because you just can’t have too many hot dogs, especially on the summer holiday weekend of Canada Day and Independence Day. It’s the time that hot dogs rule- the dog days of summer!
