This is a simple recipe, and I like simple.

I want something easy that I can basically toss in a pan and then just tend every half hour until it is done. Around the holidays, that is a godsend, as it allows me time to deal with more intricate and time consuming recipes.

It is a southern tradition, one usually made with whole hams but in this case I did use the spiral sliced ham. I have been buying those for a few years now since they have learned how to slice them better. The first spiral sliced ham I bought to try a number of years ago really wasn’t very well sliced at all and most of the ham shredded trying to get it off.

And none of these hams are cleanly sliced even now. I recommend running a boning or filet knife around the circular bone to help free up the meat. The rear portion never is sliced, and that is okay because that is the part I save (along with the bone) for other uses, such as ham and beans.

The Coke in this might at first seem weird, but it really isn’t. Being mostly a sugary syrup which most hams have baked with them in some form of glaze, often made from scratch with brown sugar or maple syrup. The couple extra ingredients I use just serve to deepen the complexity of flavor and accentuate the ham. Overall it is pretty basic, the way honey baked hams usually taste. Very good for repurposing the leftover meat!

I do hope you enjoy, and happy holidays from Palatable Pastime.

Ingredients

  • 1 9 to 10 pound spiral sliced smoked ham
  • 1 cup Coca-Cola beverage
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 ham glaze packet (the one that came with your ham)
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp garlic

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325ºF.
  • Remove ham from packaging, remove any plastic pieces, and place with the widest sliced side down on a roasting pan.
  • Stir together the Coke, water, glaze packet, dijon mustard, ginger, and garlic.
  • Pour baste over ham and cover with foil.
  • Bake at 325ºF. for about 2 hours or until internal temperature is 140ºF. on an instant read thermometer, basting every thirty minutes and removing foil for the last half hour (don't throw foil away, you can use it to tent your ham after it comes out of the oven.) This comes out to about 12-15 minutes per pound if your ham is a different size.
  • Cook's Note: Figure 5-10 ounces meat per person, less for children, more for adults.
