This sandwich, called by either of the names Manhattan or Hot Shot (such as Roast Beef Manhattan or Turkey Hot Shot) is a restaurant staple that is true comfort food.

It can be made with any kind of roasted meat, such as turkey, roast beef, roast pork, or roast chicken. And I do mean just about any recipe for the meat goes here. From your Thanksgiving leftovers to Sunday’s best roast to meats sliced and bought at your grocer’s deli.

I won’t offer recipes for all those, since there are just too many and the same goes for the gravy and potatoes as well. Whatever recipe you already like to use is going to work in this. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea that if you didn’t make a certain gravy recipe listed here that it wasn’t going to work out.

And if you don’t have any favorite recipe or are just learning how to cook, all of the ingredients can be bought at the grocery to make a simple quick hot meal at home. Meanwhile you can spend your learning moments figuring out how to make things that you can’t buy.

This sandwich is a compilation of components already found in most kitchens, and makes a great meal when served with a side salad or hot vegetable.

We love it here. And while I am an experienced cook, I will occasionally reach into the pantry for bought items to throw together like this when I am not feeling up to cooking that day. It can be a real lifesaver.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cooked sliced roast beef roast turkey, roast pork, or roast chicken, warmed
  • 1 to 1-1/2 cups hot mashed potatoes
  • 4-6 ounces hot gravy appropriate for the meat, such as beef gravy on beef
  • 1 slice soft white or whole wheat bread

Instructions

  • Place bread on plate and cover with mashed potatoes, a little of the gravy, the meat, and the rest of the gravy.
  • Serve hot with a side salad or hot vegetable to make a meal.
